Malibu Hike The Grotto

Malibu Hike, The Grotto

Thanks Silverio for this awesome photo!  In the Santa Monica Mountains off of Pacific Coast Highway, behind the icon restaurant Neptune’s Nest is an out and back trail that ends in a grotto.  I haven’t been there and now I have to go and check it out! This sounds like a fun bouldering hike that ends with a water feature.  Is this the path to Gollum’s home?

“Location: The Grotto Cyn…Malibu, CA.
This one was taken this Sunday Feb. 22nd….I shot this with my Canon digital EOS 60D.
This is a hiking trail, moderate condition, beautiful scenery, it feels like a rain forest and a lot of boulders closed to the end …waterfalls at the end.
It’s about 3 miles round trip.” Silverio Martinez.

I remember the first time I saw Neptune’s Nest I was riding my bike from Malibu to Port Hueneme. That is another story; I don’t think I would risk that again by bicycle. While beautiful, that can be a dangerous crowded little section of PCH,  and parking at Neptune’s Nest can be tricky.  Approach with caution.

Thank You & Photo Credit to Silverio!

I love the Circle X area (parking lot area for the Grotto trail). I usually go up the other way to Sandstone peak. One of my favorite hikes. It goes past a big balancing rock, a nice picnic area with creek, Skull Rock, and some great views of the Pacific, Chanel islands, Oxnard plains, the Conejo Valley, and the Santa Monica Mountains. Beautiful!
