Bikinis and flip flops. Tropical dive boats have no cabin, no shelter that usually run in sunny weather on glass flat conditions. Divers have a lot of gear, and we often leave our gear out on deck (or just under the little bench, not locked in or strapped down) because the ride is silky sunny smooth in and smooth out.
Until that one trip 6 years ago (2008? 2009?). That storm..the Majache. (that’s what the locals call it, translation currently unknown)
Those of us that rode that day out are bonded forever with these memories.
Things changed FAST
All of a sudden we looked up and all we saw was white. No more Beach Blanket Bingo. We could barely see each other anymore. We could not see the ocean next to us. Gear started flying, including heavy dangerous tanks and lead weights. Water bottles flew too, and we didn’t want to lose those because we didn’t really know how this would turn out.
The lovely normally translucent seas went from gemstone clear to seriously high swells waves and stormy conditions. Like that movie Perfect Storm. Rain and wind came in FAST from all directions. We were not in Kansas anymore.
Returning to the harbor, a trip that’s usually a pleasant singing, joking, tanning and snacking short ride, became a death defying 4 hour miserable wet jolting and scary ride. Some folks got really sick too.
We held each other and the gear down, with each other (literally).
Several boats sank that day.
The following morning, the ocean was back to being it’s beautiful calm seductive self. It was like a dream. As if nothing ever happened. I think this photo is the only evidence that remains.
