Lotus Flowers Nelumbo nucifera

“As a lotus flower is born in water, grows in water and rises out of water to stand above it unsoiled, so I, born in the world, raised in the world having overcome the world, live unsoiled by the world.” – Buddha

I posted about Water Lilies on Steemit, which are different from Lotus flowers, Nelumbo nucifera.

While they are both aquatic plants, and both root in sediment, the Lotus flowers leaves can rise far above the surface of the water. Leaves of a Water Lily stay at the water’s surface.

Lotus flowers are also sacred and are the national flower of India and Vietnam.

Both only bloom in California in the summer.

“Water surrounds the lotus flower, but does not wet its petals.” – Gautama Buddha

Lotus flowers are also edible (Water Lilies are not)!
“The flowers, seeds, young leaves, and “roots” (rhizomes) are all edible.” Wikipedia

Another remarkable trait of Lotus flowers is that they can THERMOREGULATE, regulating their own temperature. Generally only warm blooded animals can do that.

Here is my FAVORITE Lotus quote for you, “May I live like the lotus at ease in the muddy water.” – Unknown
